Background: The Nathan Taylor Dodson Undergraduate Scholarship. Taylor Dodson was born in 1922 and grew up on a farm in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He died in 1969 as a result of a heart condition. As an adult, he lived with the knowledge of his heart impairment but shared it only with his family and a few close friends. Dodson's contributions in the field of physical education included serving as an advisor in physical education for the State Department of Public Instruction of North Carolina and working as a Professor of Physical Education and Intramural Director for Men at Wake Forest University. Dodson is also remembered for his work as a sports official, in summer camps, and in professional organizations. Many southern states including the Southern District have honored Nathan Taylor Dodson by giving awards in his name.
- The recipient must be a member of NCAAHPERD-SM.
- The honoree must be an undergraduate student majoring in one of NCAAHPERD-SM's allied fields.
- The applicant must attend a North Carolina college or university.
- Must have at least an overall B average in all college work and higher expectations for work within the major.
Two-thirds of the evaluation will stem from the applicants' scholarship and one-third from the applicant's evidence of his/her leadership and contributions to the profession.
