Student Major Retreat 2016

April 1 - 2, 2016

The NCAAHPERD-SM Student Majors Association Leadership Workshop is an opportunity for our student members to learn how to be leaders in their respective fields, at their respective schools, and in the organization. This is a great opportunity to improve your leadership skills and learn more about being a professional.

The Student Leadership Workshop will be held in Efland, NC at Chestnut Ridge Camp and Retreat Center on Friday and Saturday, April 1-2. Any student, who is a member of NCAAHPERD-SM, majoring in health, physical education, dance, exercise science, sport management, athletic training, or recreation may apply to attend the event. Students must be a member of NCAAHPERD-SM to be eligible to attend. You may register to be a member for only $10.00 as an undergraduate or $20.00 as a graduate student, per year. Membership registration can be completed by going to the following address.  http://www.ncaahperd-sm.org/join.html

Students will attend at NO COST! Lodging, Friday's dinner, and Saturday's breakfast are provided by NCAAHPERD-SM.

The fun starts Friday with check in from 2 pm to 2:30 pm at the Morris Center. After a short meeting, it’s on to the low ropes challenge course until 6 pm. After dinner, attendees will gather back at the Morris Center for a short program. At 9 pm, students can gather around a campfire and snack on S’Mores. Afterwards students are on their own to bed‐down for an evening in retreat’s cabins. Saturday begins with breakfast at 8 am, followed at 9 am by a program in the Morris Center. The highlight of the morning’s activities is the team building and initiative games session from 10 to 11 am. A brief closing session in the Morris Center ends the retreat at noon.

During the retreat, students will learn about NCAAHPERD-SM, meet some of the Board of Directors, meet their NCAAHPERD-SM Student Majors Association Adviser, President and President-elect, and start their professional networking by getting to know one another during the activity sessions. This is a great opportunity for college students.

Friday’s Guest Speakers are:

Dr. Matt Belles is the chair of Health and Physical Education Teacher Education at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina.  He has over fifteen years of experience in teaching and coaching, spanning careers in elementary physical education, higher education, large district curriculum leadership and entrepreneurship.  As an elementary physical educator he worked on a team to coordinate a county-wide field day for students transitioning to middle school.  As a large district leader he worked to advocate for expanding health and physical education through data informed decisions.  In higher education, Dr. Belles has taught a complement of both large and small group classes while working to improve curriculum.  He and his wife have a small class of their own with four children between the ages of thirteen and seven.

Mr. Chris Walker is currently in his 20th year teaching physical education at Hillsborough Elementary. He has coached middle school basketball, high school sports (cross country, winter and spring track). He is currently the head men's varsity coach at Cedar Ridge High and he has been a personal trainer for over 10 years, too.

He has presented at the state convention over 15 times, PELT's (fall and spring) 8 times, is a certified state SPARK trainer, PELT chair twice and the current NCPEA president elect.

Each student selected by NCAAHPERD-SM will need to complete and submit the online registration form. Once the student's selection has been confirmed by NCAAHPERD-SM, we will send the student a Retreat Packet and Agenda. The Retreat Packet will contain directions to Chestnut Ridge, a map of Chestnut Ridge, a Challenge Course Participant Information Letter, a Challenge Course Release Form, an Agenda and a list of the items students will want to bring to the retreat. On that list will be 2 t-shirts from your respective universities (to trade with other students) and sheets, a pillow, soap, and towels for your stay in the cabin.

The conference will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday (4/01/2016) and conclude Saturday at noon. If possible, travel arrangements should allow for arrival no later than 2:00 pm Friday and departure not before noon Saturday.
