Thinking About “Next Year” While Enjoying the Summer…

With the 2010-2011 school year over, many teachers are home for the summer, but our learning and preparing for the upcoming school year is never over.  There are so many things that physical educators would love to do in their classes that they may not have done last year: cupstacking, parachutes, skillastics, jump roping, basketball skills, lacross, etc.  And as educators we have to try to incorporate all these innovative ideas and somehow find a way to include “HEALTH” concepts as well, into a session of 30 minutes one time a week.   There are so many resources out there from websites to books to workshops; the key is to find the resources that are going to put that extra touch to the lessons and also within the “budget”.

The American Heart Association (AHA) is wonderful in supplying teachers with “free” resources including websites and materials.  The AHA is very helpful with materials but also with its personal touch with our educators.  The AHA is very invested in promoting healthy lifestyles.  The Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart is an excellent program for teachers and students.  When a teacher signs up for a Jump Rope for Heart or/and Hoops for Heart event at their school they will receive jump ropes for their class, and materials that will help promote the event and the beginning of a wonderful relationship with their AHA representative.  Along with promotion materials the teacher will receive materials to help promote health and a healthy lifestyle for their students.  If anyone is interested in starting a Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart program at their school and would like more information, please email J.J. Beale at jumpnc@gmail.com.  The American Heart website has lots of information for the general public and teachers. Below are some websites that can help teachers get the wheels rolling for the upcoming year’s lessons.

If teachers have not signed up their school for the Play 60, please look at the site to see if this could be something for you and your students.
