The Student Majors Association seeks to provide enrichment opportunities for leadership, networking, fellowship, research, and scholarship for undergraduate students preparing for an AHPERD-SM career
Background: NC SHAPE annually recognizes students majoring in the fields of health, physical education, recreation, sports management, or dance.
Student Majors awards are presented at the NC SHAPE Convention! Come and join us as we honor our award winners! We are very proud of them, and we know you will be too!

June P. Galloway Undergraduate Award
Background: The June P. Galloway Undergraduate Award and was established in her memory in 1974. Dr. Galloway joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1957 and died in March 1974 after a short illness. While at UNCG, Dr. Galloway served as coordinator for student teaching, coordinator of the athletic division and was one of the first coaches for women's basketball. Her professional leadership responsibilities included the presidency of the NCAAHPERD-SM and of the Southern Association of Physical Education for Women. Born on May 5, 1932, Dr. Galloway remains an example of the best we have in the profession. The inner values of Dr. Galloway serve as an outstanding heritage to any student, colleague, or friend. Few people pass our way during a lifetime that means so much to so many.
Nathan Taylor Dodson Undergraduate Award
Background: The Nathan Taylor Dodson Undergraduate Award. Taylor Dodson was born in 1922 and grew up on a farm in Rockingham County, North Carolina. He died in 1969 as a result of a heart condition. As an adult, he lived with the knowledge of his heart impairment but shared it only with his family and a few close friends. Dodson's contributions in the field of physical education included serving as an advisor in physical education for the State Department of Public Instruction of North Carolina and working as a Professor of Physical Education and Intramural Director for Men at Wake Forest University. Dodson is also remembered for his work as a sports official, in summer camps and in professional organizations. Many southern states including the Southern District have honored Nathan Taylor Dodson by giving awards in his name.
