Five NCAAHPERD members were among those selected to receive Southern District and national awards at the 2013 AAHPERD Convention in Raleigh.
- Charla Parker named Southern District and National High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year:
- Charla was selected as the 2013 Southern District High School Teacher Physical Education Teacher of the Year, which allowed her to compete for, and win, the honor of being named the High School PE Teacher of the Year by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. A well-respected health and physical educator, Charla has presented at state, regional, and national conferences. She is in her 30th year of teaching and her 11th year at Fuquay Varina High School. - Kristi Vincent Johnson selected as Southern District and National College/University Dance Educator of the Year:
- Kristi was selected as the 2013 Southern District AHPERD College/University Dance Educator of the Year and went on to receive the national award as the College/University Dance Educator of the Year by National Dance Association. Kristi has presented her creative and scholarly research at NCAAHPERD, TAHPERD, FAHPERD, Southern District AHPERD and American Alliance HPERD/National Dance Association conventions. - Courtney Greer honored as 2013 Southern District K-12 Dance Educator of the Year:
- Courtney is a National Board Certified Dance Educator at Enloe High School in Raleigh. She co-authored an educational curriculum titled Whole Body Wellness (Yoga and Pilates class) that’s implemented in the Wake County Public School System. Courtney is also a professional choreographer and dancer and has presented work in American Dance Festival’s Acts To Follow, dance festivals in Brussels, Belgium, Cuba, Goose Route Dance Festival in West Virginia, and NYC, NY. - Sarah Lowell named as 2013 Southern District Elementary Teacher of the Year:
- Sarah has taught at Cartoogechaye Elementary School in Franklin for 28 years. Lowell is one of the top women arctic ultra-marathon runners in the world. She uses her races to raise funds and awareness for organizations such as Special Olympics, The Challenged Athletes Association, and student’s with cancer. - Michele Wallen selected as Southern District College/University Health Educator of the Year:
- Michele is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Education and Promotion at East Carolina University. She teaches in the undergraduate and graduate school health education programs and focuses her research on curriculum integration, teacher preparation, and adolescent health issues. Prior to joining the faculty at East Carolina University, she worked as a health education consultant for the NC Department of Public Instruction.
