#PEInstitute26NC SHAPE is pleased to announce that the National Physical Education Institute is back at UNC Asheville for 2026!
The National PE Institute is a professional development conference designed to enhance the teaching practices of physical education professionals. It offers:
Expert Instruction: Presentations led by renowned experts in the field of health and physical education.
Innovative Ideas: Exposure to the latest research, best practices, and innovative teaching strategies.
Networking Opportunities: Opportunities to connect with other physical education professionals from across the country.
Continuing Education Credits: Earn valuable continuing education credits to maintain professional certifications.
Objective: The Institute aims to equip physical educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to create engaging and effective learning experiences for all students.
Attendee Dates: Thursday and Friday, July 23-24, 2026.
Attendee Costs: Early bird registration is $325 for non-NC SHAPE members and $275 for NC SHAPE members. The price includes lunch for two days. This price is comparable to the typical costs for other national events. Please note that you must be an NC SHAPE member to receive the $50 discount.
Special “Build Your Own AI Playground” Pre-Conference Seminar! ($75): We will have a limited seating opportunity for those individuals wanting to learn more about AI (Artificial Intelligence in H/PE). This will take place on Wednesday, July 22nd, from 1:00 - 5:00 PM in Mountain View at the Sherrill Center on the campus of UNC Asheville.
Virtual Conference As Well! Can't Travel to Asheville? No problem! From July 25 to August 25, you can earn up to 3.0 CEUs by watching all 4 keynote speakers and 26 other specially selected breakout sessions in the comfort of your home or while on vacation. The Virtual Conference is the same price as the in-person conference.

Exhibitor Costs: $750 for a single booth - comes with one 45-minute breakout session; $1,200 for a double booth - comes with two 45-minute breakout sessions; $3,000 for a sponsor booth - comes with two 45-minute breakout sessions and banner placement on stage and prominent booth placement.

3.0 Teacher Renewal Credits: Up to 3.0 CEUs (1 CEU = 10 Contact Hours) can be earned for this event.
1.2 CEUs (12 hours) for the in-person event on Thursday and Friday.
Plus 1.8 CEUs (18 hours) for watching the recorded sessions on the Whova App when you get home. These will be available for 30 days.
2026 Keynoters: This summer, we have been able to secure a very talented line-up of outstanding platform speakers who include:
Andy Vasily: Andy Vasily is a highly respected physical education teacher, educational consultant, and curriculum coordinator known for his extensive work in international education. Originally from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, he trained at the University of Windsor and has taught at International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in countries including Japan, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, China, and Saudi Arabia. Currently, he serves as the PYP (Primary Years Programme) Coordinator at Antwerp International School in Belgium.
Dr. Teri Schlosser: Dr. Teri Schlosser is an Assistant Professor and Health Promotion Advisor at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP), based in the Department of Kinesiology at the Jones Health and Physical Education Center. Teri is the current President of NC SHAPE and will be our Lead Presenter on “Everything AI."
Tom Filline: Tom Filline is an elementary school physical education (PE) teacher based in Chicago, Illinois. He is best known for his social media persona, "The Angry Gym Teacher," where he shares humorous sketches and parodies about teacher life and parenting, amassing millions of views and a large following (over 190,000 on TikTok and 115,000 on Instagram). Filline began performing stand-up comedy in 2015 after training at iO Chicago and The Second City Conservatory. He has performed at notable comedy clubs like Zanies and is part of the Bored Teachers Comedy Tour. His comedic style draws from his experiences as a PE teacher, a father of twins, and a former professional wrestler and improviser.
Bo Shappell: Bo Shappell is a health and physical education teacher at Daniel Boone Area High School in Pennsylvania, with over 16 years of experience in education. Shappell is a co-founder of Wellness Education Integrated (WE Integrated) and COMCHI, organizations that provide workshops and products like COMCHI cards to foster SEL in classrooms. He has co-authored a book with his wife, Daniella Land, titled All In: The Mindset of Fitness, which emphasizes a holistic approach to wellness. He is also a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and has served as a middle school baseball, football, and wrestling coach.
Each will be tasked with delivering an exceptional keynote, a 45-minute activity session, and a classroom session!
Plus a Guest Cadre of Fantastic Presenters! Joining this group will be a hand-selected cadre of 12 National & International Presenters and Social Media Mavens. Names will be released as the event draws closer.

Hotel Accommodations: Please note that we have secured approximately 200 rooms between the Embassy Suites (primary hotel) and the Double Tree (overflow). We anticipate a turn-away crowd.
